THE DIVA
OF GAY TRAVEL TO SA

Why Gerla thinks southern Africa is such a great gay destination?
Where is your favourite residence?
Definitely Cape Town. I love the lifestyle, climate, beaches, mountains, gorgeous sunset, food and drink. Actually is there anything I do not like? Even time goes by so slowly.......
Where do you like to hang out?
The best breakfast in Cape Town is in the 12 Apostles and their Spa is worth a visit as well. Sundowners in Camps Bay or again at 12 Apostles. Favourite area is the De Waterkant. Great bars and restaurants. Best restaurant in town at the moment is Pure at Houtbay Manor, bit out of the way, but both the food and decoration is sumptuous!
Which areas are your favourites in southern Africa?
Of course first of all Cape Town then the Wild Coast, Franschhoek, Botswana (Okovanga Delta) and the pristine beaches of the deserted islands of Mozambique.
What do you do when you are in southern Africa?
I love running so always keen to do the half marathon of the Two Ocean’s. Great fun and quite challenging. Walking the mountains in Cape Town and stroll along the beaches by foot or on a horseback. Love watching the skydiving, but not keen to do it myself. Finding new undiscovered vineyards and restaurants as the quality is so good. Shopping (till I drop...), gym, wild life in the non touristy areas and almost forgot relaxation.....
When is your favourite time to go?
From February till end of May. Although I do like it from August onwards as well as you can see the whales and all the flowers are in bloom. The mountains are full of colour then. Beautiful sight.
Which beach is your favourite beach in Cape Town?
I like the ones out of the way more than the busy ones, although Camps Bay is a great beach with great bars, I prefer Clifton beach, Llandudno, Sandy Bay and Noordhoek. From Blouberg you have great views from Table Mountain.
Which is your favourite spa in Cape Town?
Camps Bay Retreat and 12 Apostles. In Franschhoek Klein Genot, absolutely divine... so is the place itself. Almost a must to stay! Only 12 rooms though!
Where would you like to retire?
That is not a difficult to answer! Cape Town or at least South Africa......
What is your favourite food shop?
Melissa's, you will find them all over Cape Town.
Which food can you not resist when you are in South Africa?
Sushi, Oysters and ostrich meat.
And last question. Who is your favourite gay person?
Without upsetting anybody as I have quite a few gay friends. Of course my brother as he is not only my brother, but we share both our love for travelling and Oly my hairdresser as he is a big inspiration for me!
