Best time to visit Southern Africa….
When to go where in this beautiful part of the world?
As going on holiday is always a special time, which you often will
have planned a long time before hand, you would like to get it right
to enjoy it at it’s best! Unfortunately these days it is not so easy
to answer anymore due to climate changes. As this affects the
whole world, we will probably not get it spot on anymore. As for this
year there were terrible down poors in Southern Africa, even in the
Namibian dessert and some parts of South Africa.
Not only the weather affects your holidays, but also when is the best time to do the game viewing?
Often the cooler season is the best one to so that would be in their winter. So between June and September, which is of course excellent as this is the summer break in the UK! And another benefit is, that is less crowded and more or less malaria free.
January and February
These are the best seasons for sun lovers in South Africa as it these are the hottest two months! The Western Cape is the best part to go to as the East part can be very hot and humid, especially in Kwazulu Natal. It still can be a bit breezy in the Cape, but this cools and down and makes it more bearable.
You will still find the loggerhead and leatherback turtles off the KwaZulu Natal coastline.
March and April
We think this is almost the best time to visit the Western Cape as the South Easter has calmed down, the evenings are still lovely and warm and you can sit out till late at night. It is still summer in South Africa, but not as hot so for Europeans a lovely temperature and possibly dryer in the Eastern part of South Africa and less humid.
Lesotho is good to visit this time of the year as it is still nice and warm and not a lot of rainfall.
May and June
Although this is winter in South Africa, the temperature is still very pleasant. In the past you used to have quite a few showers during this period, but this is becoming less and less due to the climate changes. Due to the rain and the cooler weather, the protea’s will start showing their colours and not to forget the agapanthus and callas, which you will see in abundance. This is the best game-viewing season around Kruger as there is less vegetation you can spot the game much easier and due to the lack of water the game is gathering around the waterholes. Due to the less humid weather, this is almost a malaria free period.
This is one of the best times to visit Mozambique, as the sea is now nice and calm so excellent conditions for divers and snorkels. The temperatures are in the low 20s. This is the peak season for game viewing in the Okavango Delta in Botswana as the floodwaters are reaching the Delta.
July and August
It is still winter in South Africa. July is quite cold, but towards the end of August it is getting warmer, but the evenings and mornings can still be quite cold. The beauty of this season is that all the flowers will be on it’s best in the Western Cape. This is the best time to go up the West Coast to soak up all the colours of all the beautiful flowers.
In August the Whales are arriving in the Western Cape so enough excuses for a visit. This is still a good game-viewing season around Kruger as there is less vegetation you can spot the game much easier and due to the lack of water the game is gathering around the waterholes. Due to the less humid weather, this is almost a malaria free period.

September and October
Spring arrives in South Africa.
This is a lovely time of the year. It still can be quite cool in the mornings and in the evenings, but during the day it is warming up and everything comes alive again. The beauty of this season is that all the flowers will be on it’s best in the Western Cape and Namaqualand. This is the best time to go up the West Coast to soak up all the colours of all the beautiful flowers. This is the best time for whale watching in the Cape. A trip to Hermanus is a must!

November and December
In the Western Cape it is getting hotter, but you can still expect some showers. December is the peak season in Cape Town and it will be filled with both international and local tourists. So be aware it can get quite crowded.
As the rain is arriving in Southern Africa, the North part of South Africa is getting hotter and wetter as well. Especially in the afternoon you can expect some thunder showers in and around the Kruger Park.
As everything is so nice and green, this is an excellent birding season. You will also find loggerhead and leatherback turtles off the KwaZulu Natal coastline.
In Mozambique it is getting hotter as well and you can expect some showers. In December just as in the Cape this is the peak season.
